Ozapft is! This is the traditional saying that is used every year to open the Oktoberfest on the Wiesn fairground in Munich, Bavaria. The saying comes from Thomas Wimmer who was mayor of Munich from 1948 to 1960. He proclaimed this for the first time at the opening in 1950 and since then it is repeated every year once the mayor has tapped the first keg of beer to signal that the festivities may begin.
In this part of the world, Oktoberfest-style beer festivals now take place far beyond the borders of Bavaria. And all of Germany is in agreement on this matter, “You can have a good party anywhere!” What more do you need? A dirndl or lederhosen, some oompah music, high spirits and traditional beer, and then the party can really get started.
